Who I Am
I’ve have been married to my lovely wife, Mary, for nearly 20 years. We have three sons, James and Thomas, who are in high school, and Jacob in middle school. I hold a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees and a doctorate, and I’m completing a second doctorate from the Western Michigan University School of Public Affairs. I’ve taught in several colleges and graduate schools, focusing mostly on economics and leadership.
For the last 5 years, I’ve been Director of Programs at the Acton Institute, a conservative think tank on economics, public policy and ethics. I’ve worked both all over the United States and internationally, talking about how government policies affect economies, families and freedom.
I’ve also been a small businessman with several partners for the last 11 years. We invest in real estate in the state of Michigan. I’ve become well versed in the business climate of our great state, and I know the cost to all segments of our society when business is held back by poor government policies.
I’ve trained corporate leaders in thinking about their ethical responsibilities to society and also defended businesses against those who don’t understand that our businesses are the economic engine that drives our state and nation.
Why I’m Running
I’m running for U.S. Senate because the 2006 election is key to Michigan’s economic future. Senator Stabenow’s policies have damaged our state’s business climate. We have an opportunity to make changes at the federal level that will help Michigan businesses grow. But these changes will not occur under our current leadership. It’s time to send someone with an economic and business background to Washington.
I believe that grassroots campaigns are at the heart of our democracy. Unfortunately, too many campaigns are about slick packaging with candidates who are afraid to engage on the important issues of the day.
My campaign is different. I will answer honestly every question raised. I will make my position known and I will defend my ideas. The Republican Party is a party of ideas. Our understanding of human nature, society, freedom, democracy and the role of limited government are what drives our party. We should proudly declare our principles and strongly defend them.
